There are so many ways to look at this:

Is it based on:

-the name of the country on your passport?

-where you were born?

-where your parents were born?

-where the majority of your ancestors are from?

-what team you cheer for during the olympics/world cup?

-what flag you're willing to fight under if the entire world went to war?

-your religion?

-what country fits your cultural/political/religious ideals the most?

-what country adopted/accepted you or your family in times of need?

The fact that any one of these (& many others), or any combination of them can make a perfectly valid argument as to your National Identity shows how we all define it according to our own standards. It goes far beyond the colour of your skin.

So, what do you base yours on?

I base mine on where I'm born. I mean, even if by ethnicity I'm Korean, I feel no obligation to that country because I wasn't born there. Everything that has made me into who I am comes from the country that I was born in, complete with its cultural influences.

I, too, base my national identity first on the country I was born in, USA, and how much of my life I've lived here (all of my life).

If I was born in another country and moved here before the age of 10, I would consider myself identified with the country I moved to if I live the rest of my life in that country. If the move occured after 10 years of age, I would consider myself a national of the country of birth.

For me it has to be the place you were born and brought up as simple as that.

i dont really care that much, although in nationalistic issues i choose where im currently at. although im not yet fully Australian (from the Philippines), i am on Australian soil now, so my national identity is where i am right now. although my relatives are in the PH. so i can say it may be split.

Born and bred in a small country, I feel no chauvinism or special pride in that nationality or in being European or being a 'honky'. I'm a cosmopolitan.
My ethnicity is Gaul but that doesn't make me muck about wearing a winged helmet and carrying a great big sword.
Patriotism is just an handy tool for politicians, any two-bit demagogue can bring perfectly normal people to a killing frenzy. I don't think I need to expand on that, it's all in the history books.

No matter how old you are, today's the first day of the rest of your life!

this is a nice thread..I believe that someones nationality is only based on what one's feels.

What I mean is I am Greek, I was born in Greece I think
and act like a Greek and wherever I go I will be like that stupid father form My Big Fat Greek Wedding...

My cousins are they Greek?
Eva was born in Greece, she lives since shew was a Kid in Sweden but she thinks and acts like a She is Greek who happens to live in Sweden.

on the other hand her cousin Evgo (nick) was born in Sweden
she acts like a swedish and she thinks like as she Greek? not she just a swedish girl who happens to know speak Greek. Her kid will be a swedish baby with an ethnic background.

I hope you get my point.
At the end of the day as the song says "Where I lay my head is home"

I was born in China, and the majority of my relatives including my parents are. I lived there for six years, and went back to visit China in 2007 to see some of my childhood friends and relatives there. I came to the U.S. when I was six and lived here ever since and has gotten a citizenship here and is currently enlisted in the Marine Corps. I have been asked several times that if U.S. should go to war with China who I would side on. As you can see there is a conflict of interest here. I consider myself more American then I am Chinese as in behavior but my background is that of a traditional Chinese family with very patriotic family members. So I always avoid that question because I do not know for sure myself. I hate to go to China and possibility put a round through someone I know or even my family knows while I am all about being an American but as my job description goes I might have to do what I don't want to do should a war occur.
